Where did our escape take us?
Back to H’s hometown (or not too far from), to Farnham!
How we got there?
We took the train from Waterloo straight to through to Farnham. It is around £20 for a return ticket and only takes 55 minutes. Just enough time for a nap!
Where to stay:
Mercure The Bush Hotel.
The staff are wonderfully inviting and oh so welcoming, they even popped a bottle of wine in our room. The hotel was absolutely gorgeous, situated in an old building moments from Castle Street and Farnham Park. It’s a short and sweet 5 (or 10) minute walk (or amble) from the train station so no added cost of a taxi.
Best routes for a run?
Farnham Park is just a short stride or two from the Mercure but be sure not to doubt the mini hills. They creep up on you and just keep coming!

Where we dined?
We ducked into dinner at Bills which was totally divine! It’s a classic, but a goodie and the new menu is to ‘dine’ for. We couldn’t recommend their honey mustard sausages to start highly enough, and the cauliflower steak for mains is a must try. The Bills bucket of gin, served with a wedge of juicy grapefruit plays the perfect partner to any dish and if you’re feeling real fancy there’s a Baked Alaska to share for finishers.
Castle Street is lined with plenty of places to pop into, no matter where your cuisine preference lies. Zizzi, Cote and The Botanist all sit happy on the high street ready to refuel and rehydrate, but if you’re looking for something a little different give The Mulberry a go. It’s situated moments from the station, boasts the biggest beer garden in Farnham and is said to be the home of the gourmet burger!
TTH Top Tip:
Give yourself time to amble. Farnham is not only delightful on the eye, it plays host to many a good walks, and hours of castle exploring. There’s also a couple of cute courtyards filled with pretty tearooms and if you ask us, time spent tea drinking and cake eating is time spent well!
