The Race: Cascais 70.3 Ironman

Plodded upon: We swam in the Atlantic Ocean, then cycled and ran on the Portuguese roads.

Where’d E go?
The swim started on the beach in Cascais by the Monumento aos Descobrimentos Portuguese. We swam in a clockwise loop and came out of the swim up a long concrete boat ramp. There was then a 600m run to the Hipodromo Manuel Possolo which played host to the transition area.
The bike route starts off pretty flat with an out and back along the coast almost all the way to Lisbon. Once moments from being back at Cascais we took a right turning and headed up into the hills. A speedy loop around the Circuito Estoril racing track and back to climbing uphill towards Sintra. The final leg is a zoomy down-hill section all the way back down to the transition area.
The run loop follows the start of the bike heading out for 5km along the hot coastal road, all the way to a turning point near Sao Pedro do Estoril, then heading back into town before taking on lap 2.
The home straight saw E running up the red carpet next to the beach where the swim started, to collect that Ironman bling.
E LOVED…
The views! We have never been to Cascais before but it is somewhere we would both like to return to. The water was sparkling blue, the hills bright green and the architecture showed off the towns true history. Return incoming…
E Struggled…
Sighting in the swim was tough as it was sunrise which made everything look orange. To top it off everyone’s hats were orange and the turning markers were orange too!
The second lap on the run was really tough! My calves were tight from the bike and the small rolling hills were really getting me in the heat.
Why this Race…
Everyone was so welcoming! Also, the ride is the perfect mix of long straights to really get in some speed and some punchy hills to stop it getting boring.
